Tranquility Base is the one destination on this list chosen for being boring. NASA wanted the flattest, emptiest ground they could find, because the first landing had to survive the terrain as much as the descent. That history is the whole point — and it makes it the hardest region here to print well.

Where did Apollo 11 land?

Apollo 11 landed at 0.674° north, 23.473° east, in Mare Tranquillitatis — the Sea of Tranquility — on the lunar nearside, almost exactly on the equator. The Lunar Module touched down at 20:17:40 UTC on 20 July 1969, and Armstrong and Aldrin spent about 21.5 hours on the surface before lifting off with 21.5 kilograms of samples.

Why was this site chosen?

Because nothing much is there. Mare Tranquillitatis is an ancient lava plain, and the landing ellipse was picked for being flat, low in boulders and free of the steep slopes that would have made a first landing far riskier. Everything dramatic about Apollo 11 happened in the spacecraft and in the story, not in the landscape.

What does Tranquility Base look like as a 3D print?

Flat — and you should know that before you print it. At true scale this region is close to a smooth plate with shallow dimples where small craters sit. It is the clearest case on the Moon for turning terrain exaggeration up: at three to five times, the low ridges and crater rims that the eye cannot find at 1× come out as real texture.

What you are printing here is a place, not a spectacle. As an engraved-frame piece with the coordinates and the date around the edge, that reads better than any crater on this list.

Can you see the Apollo hardware in the print?

No. The descent stage left behind is about four metres across, and the elevation data behind these models is measured in metres per sample, not centimetres. The lander is far below what any printable terrain model can resolve. What you get is the ground it stands on, at the coordinates where it stands.
