Who makes it
I'm Mike, the maker behind SimplySolid3D. Before OrbitStudio I designed 3D-printable models and published them on MakerWorld, where makers have downloaded them tens of thousands of times. My goal has always been the same: make 3D printing accessible for everyone, with designs that just work. OrbitStudio is the next step: instead of one more model, a tool that lets you make your own.
What OrbitStudio is
Two tools in the browser. The terrain generator turns elevation data of any region of the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Vesta or Ceres, or of the sides of Pluto and Charon that New Horizons measured, into a jigsaw puzzle or a solid ornament, with the terrain and the frame already separated for multicolor printing. OrbitStudio Sky turns the night sky over any place and moment into a printable star map. No CAD, no mesh repair.
OrbitStudio started as a crowdfunding campaign on MakerWorld for the Moon and Mars. Mercury, Venus, Vesta, Ceres, Pluto and Charon followed after it.
How the data is chosen
Every model is built from measured elevation data from NASA missions, never sculpted or generated. Before a world is added, its data is checked twice: once for quality, by building test models through the real generator, and once for its licence, because a model you buy has to be built from data that may be turned into a product. Some sharper datasets were left out for exactly that reason. Where a mission measured only part of a world, as on Pluto and Charon, OrbitStudio offers only the measured part, and says so.
OrbitStudio is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA, JPL, Caltech or USGS. The sources and credits for every world are in the terms, section 08.
